Federal Judge Criticizes Trump DOJ for AI-Generated Citation in ICE Case
A federal judge in Michigan has criticized the Trump administration's Department of Justice for using a citation in a legal filing that appears to have been generated by artificial intelligence. Chief U.S. District Judge Hala Y. Jarbou, appointed by President Trump, identified the issue in a habeas corpus case involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainee. The case challenged the government's automatic stay of a bond order. The judge noted that the DOJ's filing cited a nonexistent court decision, suggesting it was likely created by AI. The case was ultimately dismissed as moot after the stay expired, and the government allowed the detainee, Izzeddin Ahmed Abdulgahffar Daghra, to be released on a $35,000 bond. Judge Jarbou emphasized the responsibility of attorneys using AI tools to verify their work, highlighting a growing concern over AI-generated legal research leading to fabricated authorities.
