FAA Advances NOTAM System Modernization to Enhance Airspace Safety
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is progressing with its modernization of the Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system, aiming to improve safety and reliability across the National Airspace System. The transition involves moving from two legacy systems to a new cloud-based platform, the NOTAM Management Service, supplied by CGI Federal. This modernization seeks to address issues with outdated hardware that previously caused operational disruptions, including a significant failure in early 2023. The FAA has completed the first phase of this transition by shutting down the US NOTAM System in April, with plans to retire the Federal NOTAM System later this year. The new system will serve as the single authoritative source for all NOTAMs, and the FAA is working on implementing a new ICAO NOTAM format, although the timeline for this shift remains undetermined.
