Southwestern Electric Power Co. Upgrades East Texas Grid with Taller Utility Poles to Reduce Outages

Southwestern Electric Power Co. (SWEPCO) is undertaking a significant infrastructure overhaul in East Texas, replacing approximately 700 miles of copper line and utility poles with taller, sturdier equipment. This project, costing around $250 million, is largely funded by a $200 million grant from the Texas Energy Fund. The initiative aims to enhance the power grid's resilience against severe weather, reduce storm-related outages, and mitigate wildfire risks. The taller utility poles will also provide additional space for fiber-optic internet providers and other utilities, who already pay to use the poles under existing agreements. SWEPCO officials have stated that customers will not bear the cost of the $200 million grant-funded portion of the project. The rebuild is expected to be completed by 2031, with work continuing across SWEPCO's East Texas service area. Temporary outages may occur in areas where crews are actively working on the upgrades.
