China Rebukes Philippines Over South China Sea Dispute Following Defense Secretary's Public Confrontation
Tensions between China and the Philippines have escalated following a public confrontation at the Seoul Defense Dialogue. Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. publicly rebutted a note from the Chinese side that reiterated Beijing's rejection of the 2016 South China Sea arbitration ruling. Teodoro accused China of "coercion, bullying and aggression" in the South China Sea, a statement that went viral in the Philippines. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning responded by urging the Philippine official to "cut the provocations and theatrics" and cease undermining China-Philippines relations and regional stability. This incident adds to existing friction, which includes Chinese coast guard vessels using water cannons on a Philippine ship and China declaring a "nature reserve" around Scarborough Shoal. Teodoro has been sanctioned by Beijing since June, barring him and his family from entering Chinese territory due to his remarks against China.
