China Dominates Global Solid-State Battery Patent Filings in Q1 2026
In the first quarter of 2026, China led the global surge in solid-state battery patent filings, with over 1,710 applications published worldwide. According to IP analysis firm KnowMade, Chinese companies such as FAW, CATL, and Gotion were at the forefront of this activity. FAW recorded an 800% increase in filing activity compared to its 2025 quarterly average, driven by collaborations with institutions like CATARC and Jilin University. CATL and COSMX also saw significant increases in new applications. The quarter saw over 660 patent families receiving first-time grants, with notable increases from companies like Samsung and Honda. However, Toyota experienced a decline in both grants and new filings.
