Florida Kayakers Discover Remains of New York Woman Missing for Over 40 Years
In 2024, kayakers in Florida discovered human remains in a canal, which have now been identified as those of Rose Marie Gayhart, a New York woman missing since 1985. DNA testing confirmed the identity, bringing closure to a case that has puzzled authorities and family members for decades. Gayhart disappeared while living in Cape Coral, Florida, and her case has been a long-standing mystery. The identification was made possible through the collaboration of the Cape Coral Police Department, the District 21 Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office in New York, which provided familial DNA.
