Brookings Institution Study Highlights Risks of AI in Education
A recent study by the Brookings Institution has raised concerns about the use of generative AI in educational settings, suggesting that the risks may outweigh the benefits. The study, which involved interviews and focus groups with over 500 educators, parents, and students across 50 countries, as well as data from more than 400 studies, found that AI tools could lead to a decline in critical thinking and judgment skills among students. The report aligns with earlier research, including a Microsoft study, indicating that AI use is linked to poorer cognitive skills. Despite these concerns, some educators are using AI to assist in lesson planning and to adjust reading materials for English language learners.
