Lawmaker Introduces Bill to Expand EITC, Aiming to Reduce Child Poverty
Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet, D-Michigan, has introduced the Working Parents Tax Relief Act, which seeks to expand the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The bill proposes to provide parents with up to an additional $5,500 per child under the age of four, for up to three children, and increase the maximum qualifying income for the EITC to nearly $100,000 for filers with young children. The bill also includes a provision for the Treasury Department to create an optional monthly payment system for the EITC enhancement. An analysis by PolicyEngine suggests that the bill could cut taxes for over 4 million families and reduce the child poverty rate by 7% by 2035. The bill has garnered support from various organizations, including Third Way and the Detroit Regional Chamber.
