Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy Launches Trackchair Program to Enhance Nature Accessibility
The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy has introduced a Trackchair Program, providing individuals with mobility issues and disabilities the opportunity to experience nature trails. The program, which began with a pilot last fall and officially launched in May, utilizes battery-powered, all-terrain wheelchairs designed to navigate outdoor environments. Currently, four Trackchairs are available for use in Frick Park. First-time users are accompanied by a Conservancy staff member or volunteer, while subsequent trips can be taken with a family member, friend, or support person. The program is open to individuals aged five and older with limited mobility, with those under 18 requiring adult accompaniment. This initiative aims to restore access to nature for those who previously found it challenging due to physical limitations, as highlighted by a participant who expressed not expecting to be in the woods again.
