Michigan Faces Infrastructure Crisis Amid Rising Floodwaters
Michigan is grappling with severe flooding that has exposed the vulnerabilities of its aging infrastructure. According to Bridge Michigan, two-thirds of the state's 2,600 dams have surpassed their intended lifespan, requiring an estimated $1 billion in repairs. The recent floods have put significant pressure on these structures, particularly in Cheboygan and Bellaire, where officials are on high alert. The Bellaire dam, over a century old, is struggling to manage the high water levels. In Escanaba, the local water treatment plant is overwhelmed, processing four times its usual capacity. This situation underscores the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades, as climate change continues to bring unpredictable and severe weather patterns to the region.
