Chytrid Fungus Threatens Amphibian Populations, Some Toads Show Resilience
The chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, has been responsible for more global species extinctions than any other infectious disease, severely impacting amphibian populations worldwide. However, researchers have discovered that some populations of common midwife toads in the Pyrenees have developed a unique resilience to the fungus. These toads secrete antimicrobial peptides earlier than others, providing them with a defense mechanism against the infection. The study, conducted by teams from University College London, the Zoological Society London, and Imperial College London, highlights the role of environmental factors and genetic traits in the toads' survival. The research suggests that early maturation of immune defenses and a diverse range of skin peptides are key to the toads' ability to withstand the fungal threat.
