Defra Explores AI Use for Policy Drafting, Aims to Enhance Legislative Processes
The UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is investigating the potential use of artificial intelligence (AI) to assist in drafting policy and legislation. Minister Angela Eagle stated that while AI tools are not currently used to draft legislation directly, exploratory initiatives are underway to integrate AI with other digital tools to aid policy professionals. These initiatives include examining platforms that could support research and communication among officials. The department is also considering AI for comparative analysis between the UK and partner jurisdictions, as well as for briefing and correspondence within technical policy areas. The goal is to enhance the efficiency of drafting processes while maintaining oversight by expert drafters.
