Blue Bell Creameries Faced Misdemeanor Charge and Fines Following 2015 Listeria Outbreak
In 2015, Blue Bell Creameries initiated a full product recall after U.S. officials linked a multi-state Listeria outbreak to two of its four production plants. This outbreak resulted in 10 hospitalizations and three deaths. Despite knowing about Listeria contamination in some products as early as February 2015, the company initially only pulled the tainted items without immediately alerting customers. This led to a 2023 misdemeanor charge and a $100,000 fine for former Blue Bell president and chief executive officer Paul Kruse, who had faced potential jail time for wire fraud and conspiracy before accepting a plea deal. Blue Bell's operations were temporarily shut down around April 2015, resuming later that year with updated safety measures. In 2020, a Texas federal court ordered the company to pay over $17 million in fines for distributing adulterated ice cream products.
