Trump Administration Supports Sable Offshore in California Pipeline Dispute
The Trump administration has intervened to support Sable Offshore Corp., a Houston-based oil company, in its efforts to restart a California oil pipeline system. This system has been inactive since a 2015 oil spill. Despite a court order and a 2020 consent decree requiring specific safety measures before resuming operations, the administration cited national security concerns to override state regulations. The Department of Energy invoked the Defense Production Act to justify the pipeline's restart, arguing that California's reliance on foreign oil compromises U.S. national security. This move has sparked legal battles, with environmental groups and the state challenging the federal government's authority to bypass state oversight.
