LeBron James Criticized for Overlooking Memphis HBCU LeMoyne-Owen in Favor of Vanderbilt
LeBron James, a prominent NBA figure, has been criticized for his comments suggesting the Memphis Grizzlies should move to Nashville, highlighting Vanderbilt University as an academic anchor while overlooking the significance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) like LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis. Christopher B. Davis, the president of LeMoyne-Owen College, expressed concern that James' remarks contribute to a narrative that diminishes the importance of Black institutions. LeMoyne-Owen College, with a history of over 160 years, has been a cornerstone of Black excellence and community resilience in Memphis. The college has faced challenges, including potential cuts to Title III funding, which supports HBCUs, and the cancellation of research grants under anti-DEI policies. Despite these challenges, LeMoyne-Owen has seen growth in enrollment and academic programs.
