Maryland Democrats Pass Redistricting Amendment Targeting Republican House Seat
Maryland Democrats have successfully passed a constitutional amendment aimed at redistricting, which could potentially impact the state's lone Republican-held House seat, currently occupied by Rep. Andy Harris. The amendment, which passed both the House and Senate, seeks to redraw congressional districts to make Harris's district more competitive for Democratic challengers. This measure, however, will not affect the 2026 midterm elections and requires voter approval in an upcoming ballot. The amendment clarifies that certain redistricting parameters, previously struck down by a 2022 court decision, apply only to state Assembly districts and not congressional boundaries. The Maryland Supreme Court would gain original jurisdiction to review congressional redistricting plans if the amendment is approved.
