Chevron Wind Farm in Casper Dismantled, Fate of 120-Foot Blades Undisclosed Amidst Recycling Challenges
An 11-turbine Chevron wind farm in Casper, Wyoming, originally built in 2009, is currently being dismantled. This wind farm reportedly barely operated since its construction. Crews are removing the 120-foot blades, but the destination of these decommissioned blades remains undisclosed by Chevron. This situation highlights a broader challenge in the wind energy industry regarding the disposal and recycling of large fiberglass turbine blades. While the Casper Regional Landfill previously accepted over a thousand blades until mid-2021, it now requires blades to be ground into four-inch chunks or smaller, a process deemed cost-prohibitive by operators. In contrast, a facility in Louisiana, Missouri, operated by Veolia North America, has processed over 7,000 blades since 2020 by shredding them for use in cement kilns.
