Virginia Lawmakers Enact Strict Labeling Requirements for Cultivated Meat Products
Virginia has implemented new legislation mandating clear labeling for manufactured-protein products, including cultivated meat, when they are presented as traditional meat or poultry. This law, effective July 1, 2026, requires products that are plant-based, meatless, cell-cultivated, fungus-based, or insect-based to be explicitly identified as such. The move comes as videos circulating on social media suggest lab-grown meat is widely available in grocery stores, a claim experts and Virginia law dispute. According to Shaye Arluk, a registered dietitian and nutritionist at Sentara Health, cultivated meat is produced from animal cells grown in a controlled environment with added nutrients, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and growth factors to develop muscle, connective tissue, and fat.
