Adolescent Brain Remodeling Identified as Key to Memory Development
Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine have discovered a biological process in mice that sheds light on how memory circuits mature during adolescence. The study, published in PLOS Biology, found that the retrosplenial cortex, a key memory region, undergoes significant remodeling during late adolescence. This process temporarily makes earlier memories harder to retrieve, although they resurface later with less detail. The findings suggest that adolescence is a dynamic period of brain maturation, with implications for understanding how memories are accessed and prioritized during this developmental stage.
