Tennessee Issues Nation's First License for Stellarator Fusion Power Plant to Type One Energy
Tennessee has issued the nation's first license for a nuclear fusion power plant to Type One Energy, marking a significant step in the pursuit of fusion energy. The company plans to bring a fusion power plant online near Knoxville by 2034, starting with the construction of a prototype machine. This development follows Tennessee becoming the first state to establish regulations for nuclear fusion machines in June, a power delegated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 2023. Type One Energy's stellarator design aims to produce 400 megawatts of power. The project will also involve a research site in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the University of Tennessee.
