Northeast Farmers Face Weather Challenges with Frost and Heat
Farmers in the Northeast are experiencing significant weather fluctuations, with temperatures swinging from unseasonably warm to cold. According to AP News, the first half of April saw temperatures rise into the 90s°F (32°C) in cities like New York and Philadelphia, followed by a drop into the 50s°F (10°C) and even snow showers in New England. This abrupt change is causing concern among flower and fruit farmers, who are forced to harvest crops early or risk losing them. Gregory Witscher of Understory Farm in Bridport, Vermont, noted that tulips intended for Mother's Day have bloomed prematurely due to the warm weather. Similarly, Apple Hill Orchards in Ohio reported early budding of peach and apple trees, with some peach varieties damaged by subsequent freezing temperatures.
