Robin Williams' Family Revives Instagram to Combat AI Deepfake Abuse
The family of the late actor Robin Williams has reactivated his official Instagram account to actively combat the misuse of his voice and likeness through artificial intelligence (AI) deepfakes. This decision comes after Zelda Williams, Robin Williams' daughter, publicly expressed her distress last year over AI-generated videos of her father circulating online. The family aims to transform the inactive account into a trusted platform for authentic content, including stories, photos, videos, and memories, to preserve his legacy with accuracy and care. This move is a direct response to the growing issue of AI abuse, where guardrails in AI chatbots designed to prevent the generation of public figures' likenesses are often bypassed, leading to the creation of unauthorized and sometimes sexualized deepfakes of celebrities.
