Guatemalan Man Pleads Guilty in U.S. Court for Fatal Migrant Smuggling Crash
Daniel Zavala Ramos, a Guatemalan national, has pleaded guilty in a federal court in Laredo, Texas, to charges related to a tragic migrant smuggling incident. The crash occurred in Mexico in 2021 when a truck carrying over 160 migrants overturned, resulting in the deaths of at least 53 individuals and injuring more than 100. Ramos, who faces a potential life sentence, was charged with conspiring to smuggle migrants from Guatemala through Mexico to the U.S. He is the first among six Guatemalans charged in connection with the crash to be convicted.
