Medicare Advantage Plan Changes Trigger Special Enrollment Periods for Beneficiaries
Medicare Advantage beneficiaries receiving letters about plan terminations or significant network changes are granted Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) to switch plans. When a Medicare Advantage plan does not renew, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) provides a Non-Renewal SEP from December 8 to the end of February, allowing beneficiaries to join a different plan or return to Original Medicare. Additionally, a significant network change, such as a hospital leaving the network, may trigger a SEP. Beneficiaries have a 63-day window to secure a Medigap policy without medical underwriting, offering protection against health-based premium increases.
