McKinney Gains Key Endorsements in Detroit Congressional Primary, Highlighting Black Representation
Michigan state Rep. Donavan McKinney is challenging incumbent U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar in the Democratic primary for Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. The race, scheduled for August 4, 2026, has become a focal point for discussions on Black representation in Detroit, a majority-Black city that has not had a Black member of Congress since 1955. McKinney has received endorsements from prominent figures such as U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, as well as members of the Congressional Black Caucus, including Steven Horsford and Ayanna Pressley. These endorsements mark a significant shift, as they break with House Democratic leadership to support McKinney over Thanedar, who has the backing of other Democratic leaders and substantial financial support.
