CIA Mission Facilitates US-UAE AI Cooperation Amid Security Concerns
A CIA mission led by veteran operative Jonny Gannon in Abu Dhabi has reportedly facilitated cooperation between the United States and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The mission aimed to assess the trustworthiness of G42, a leading AI and cloud computing company in the UAE, which had previous business ties with Chinese companies. Concerns were raised about the potential for advanced American technology to fall into Chinese hands. Gannon's investigation, conducted under diplomatic cover, focused on G42's leadership and its connections with Chinese technology firms. As a result of the mission, G42 took steps to reduce its reliance on Chinese technology and comply with additional security requirements, paving the way for a $1.5 billion investment from Microsoft. This cooperation has led to the UAE gaining access to advanced AI chips, including those produced by Nvidia, and the announcement of Stargate UAE, a significant AI infrastructure project.
