Consumer Reports Warns of Counterfeit Squishy Toys Posing Health Risks to Children
Consumer Reports has issued a warning regarding counterfeit versions of popular 'squishy' sensory toys, stating that federal safety officials are concerned about serious health and safety risks to children. On August 5, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) alerted the public that these fake and counterfeit squishy toys do not comply with federal safety standards. The CPSC has intercepted over 350,000 squishy toys at U.S. ports, but counterfeit products continue to appear online, on social media, and in discount stores. These toys may contain hazardous or unsafe materials. This warning follows a Consumer Reports investigation that found reports of children suffering chemical burns after their squishy toys burst open, with some tested gels having an acidic pH similar to lemon juice.
