Fran Drescher, the president of SAG-AFTRA, has drawn attention to the difficulties actors face in maintaining health insurance coverage, particularly in the evolving landscape of television production. During the 2023 actors' strike, Drescher contrasted the traditional network model, which often featured successful shows running for 22 to 28 episodes per season over many years, with the current streaming series model. Streaming productions typically offer shorter seasons, often between six and ten episodes, and fewer overall seasons. This shift significantly impacts actors who rely on individual job earnings to meet the union's minimum income or work-day requirements for health coverage.
