Kazakhstan and China Discuss Nuclear Disarmament Amid Key Anniversaries
Kazakhstan and China have engaged in discussions focused on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, coinciding with significant anniversaries related to Kazakhstan's anti-nuclear history. Kazakhstan's First Deputy Foreign Minister Yerzhan Ashikbayev met with Han Chunlin, the Chinese Ambassador to Kazakhstan, to discuss bilateral cooperation in multilateral forums and key regional and international issues. The discussions are timely, as Kazakhstan is set to commemorate three major anniversaries: 35 years since the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, 20 years since the signing of the Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia, and 30 years since the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty was opened for signature. These anniversaries highlight Kazakhstan's transition from a major nuclear testing ground to a proponent of a nuclear-weapon-free framework.
