Imperial Valley Social Justice Committee Celebrates AAPI Heritage Month with Cultural Event
The Imperial Valley Social Justice Committee hosted an Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month celebration at the El Centro Public Library on May 16. The event featured cultural dances, music, food, and speakers, highlighting the diverse traditions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. This marks the fourth year the committee has organized such an event, aiming to educate the local community about different cultures. Attendees experienced traditional dances such as the Filipino Alitaptap, Hawaiian hula, and Chinese lion dance. The event also included historical speakers like Mary Jane Galviso from the Filipino Farmers Cooperative, who shared personal stories about the Filipino community's history in the Imperial Valley.
