High Mouse Populations Challenge Australian Winter Cropping
As winter cropping season approaches in Australia, high mouse populations are posing a significant challenge for growers, particularly in regions like Northampton. According to Elders agronomist Belinda Eastough, current mouse numbers in her area exceed those seen during previous plagues in 2021 and 2022. The presence of approximately 6,000 mice per hectare in some paddocks is attributed to leftover grain from strong cereal seasons, which provides ample food and shelter for the rodents. Farmers are advised to monitor paddocks by counting active burrows and to report sightings via the MouseAlert website to keep local data updated.
