NYC Transit Workers Union Calls for Removal of Judges Over Bail Decisions in Assault Cases
The Transit Workers Union Local 100 in New York City is advocating for the removal of judges who have released individuals accused of assaulting transit workers without bail. According to data from TWU Local 100, 87 on-duty New York City Transit and MTA bus employees have been assaulted this year, marking a 13% increase from 2025 and a 36% increase from 2024. John Chiarello, president of TWU Local 100, expressed strong disapproval over two specific cases where assailants were released without bail after attacking workers. One incident involved Thywill Anasu, who allegedly assaulted bus operator Johnny Rodriguez, causing brain bleeds and other injuries. Despite the Westchester County District Attorney's Office requesting $50,000 cash bail, Judge George Fufidio set bail at $5,000, which Anasu posted.
