HHS Launches SURPASS Program to Revolutionize Clinical Trial Design with AI
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has initiated the SURPASS program, an AI-driven effort aimed at transforming clinical trial design and execution. This five-year program, operated by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), seeks to move beyond traditional fixed-phase trials by integrating predictive computational models, continuous analysis, and automated operations. SURPASS, which stands for Simulation-augmented, Real-time Platform Adaptive Seamless Trials, is designed to identify hidden protocol risks, such as overly restrictive eligibility criteria and patient dropout patterns, through AI-driven simulations. The initiative combines adaptive platform trial design, AI-enabled site activation, a nationwide data infrastructure, and patient data contribution tools. This comprehensive approach is intended to reduce trial timelines, costs, and patient burden, ultimately speeding up the development of new drugs and therapies. The program is part of a larger federal initi...
