California Energy Commission Revises Tire Regulation Proposal Following Public Feedback
The California Energy Commission (CEC) has revised its proposed regulations on replacement tires after receiving feedback from the public and industry stakeholders. Initially introduced in April, the proposal aimed to ensure that replacement tires meet the efficiency standards of those sold on new vehicles. However, following a public hearing on June 10, the CEC has made amendments to the proposal, which include extending the implementation timeline and adding more exemptions for specific tire types. The revised proposal now includes carve-outs for all-season tires with the three-peak mountain snowflake certification, competition tires meeting certain specifications, run-flat tires, large diameter off-road tires, and long-life tires. The timeline for Phase 1 regulations has been pushed from January 1, 2028, to January 1, 2029, while Phase 2 regulations are set to begin on January 1, 2033.
