U.S.-Saudi Nuclear Deal Raises Concerns Over Nonproliferation Standards
The U.S.-Saudi nuclear agreement, a 123 agreement under the U.S. Atomic Energy Act, has sparked significant debate due to its departure from the 'gold standard' of nuclear technology-sharing. The agreement reportedly does not require Saudi Arabia to forgo fuel cycle activities conducive to a nuclear weapons program, such as enrichment and reprocessing, nor to accept the highest standard of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards. This has raised concerns about nuclear proliferation in the Middle East, especially given Saudi Arabia's statements about pursuing nuclear weapons if Iran acquires them.
