Waymo and Waze Collaborate to Improve Road Safety with Pothole Data
Waymo, a robotaxi company, and Waze, a community-driven GPS navigation app, have announced a joint venture aimed at addressing pothole issues in major cities. The pilot program will utilize Waymo's autonomous driving technology to collect data on road conditions, which will be shared with city Departments of Transportation through the Waze for Cities app. This initiative is set to begin in five major markets: Austin, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and the San Francisco Bay Area, with plans for future expansion. The collaboration was inspired by city officials' need for improved road condition reporting, as current methods relying on resident reports and manual inspections have proven inadequate.
