University of Missouri Breaks Ground on $120 Million Payne Energy Innovation Center to Address AI Energy Demands
The University of Missouri (Mizzou) has broken ground on the $120 million Payne Energy Innovation Center, a new interdisciplinary research facility designed to address the growing energy demands associated with artificial intelligence (AI) training and use. The center, projected to be completed in 2028, will span 116,000 square feet across four floors and will serve as a collaborative hub for researchers, industry partners, and students. It will focus on three main areas: energy generation and use, nuclear and materials science, and information on AI and other cyber technology. The facility is named after Mizzou alum and chairman of PayneCrest Electric, David Payne, who contributed $50 million to the College of Engineering and the center. Additionally, Jim Fitterling, Executive Chairman at Dow and a Mizzou alum, pledged another $10 million. The state legislature provided $90 million in support for the center.
