St. Louis County Library Program Fosters Early Childhood Literacy
The St. Louis County Library in Missouri is successfully running a program called '1,000 Books Before Kindergarten,' designed to encourage early childhood literacy. The program promotes reading among caregivers and children, allowing families to track each book read and offering prizes as milestones are reached. Malachi Henderson, a six-year-old from St. Louis, recently completed the program, having read 1,000 books before starting kindergarten. His mother, Angel Dallas, emphasized the importance of reading as a foundational skill for all other subjects. Studies indicate that third graders not reading at grade level are significantly more likely to drop out of high school, highlighting the critical role of early literacy in long-term academic and life success. Hundreds of libraries nationwide participate in similar programs.
