Reddit Forums Reveal Gaps in Clinical Understanding of Menopause Symptoms, Study Finds
A recent study published in JAMA Network Open, conducted by researchers including Yulin Hswen, an associate professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Maryland, compared menopause-related discussions on Reddit with electronic health record notes from the University of California, San Francisco. The findings indicate a significant disparity between what women discuss online and what is documented in clinical records. Online forums show women frequently discussing emotional well-being and cognitive symptoms such as brain fog, memory problems, and difficulty finding words, nearly three to four times more often than these issues appear in their medical records. Conversely, clinical records primarily focus on physical symptoms. Women on Reddit often report that their perimenopause and menopause symptoms are misdiagnosed or dismissed as mental health disorders, early-onset dementia, or autoimmune issues, leading to unnecessary testing and antidepressant prescriptions.
