International Coalition Formed to Enhance Carbon Market Integrity
A new international coalition has been established to improve the integrity and effectiveness of carbon markets, with the aim of supporting the Paris Agreement's goals. The coalition, which includes the European Union, Brazil, and China, will focus on developing robust monitoring, reporting, and verification systems, as well as sound carbon accounting methodologies. The initiative is open to countries with nationwide compliance carbon markets, such as emissions trading systems or carbon taxes. New Zealand and Germany are among the first to join, with Brazil chairing the coalition for the first two years. The coalition plans to establish a secretariat and develop a work plan to be adopted at the Carbon Market Conference in Wuhan, China, in September 2026.
