Gallup Poll Reveals Declining American Alcohol Consumption and Perceptions of Health Benefits
A new Gallup survey indicates that the proportion of Americans who occasionally consume alcohol has reached a record low, tying last year's figures for the lowest percentage since data collection began in 1939. Currently, 54% of adults report occasional alcohol consumption, a significant drop from the peak of over 70%. The poll also found a substantial decline in the belief that moderate alcohol consumption is beneficial for health; only 6% now hold this view, compared to approximately 25% nearly two decades ago. More than half of Americans now consider drinking alcohol to be detrimental to health, a figure that has more than doubled in the past decade. The survey further reveals that 13% of adults admit to 'overdrinking,' a considerable decrease from 35% three decades prior.
