U.S. Special Operations Command Seeks Advanced AI Tools for Tactical Edge
During the SOF Week 2026 event in Tampa, Florida, U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) officials highlighted the need for advanced AI tools that can operate effectively in remote locations. Current AI tools typically rely on cloud computing, which requires connectivity to large data centers. However, SOCOM is exploring 'fog computing' to bring the power of cloud computing closer to the tactical edge, where data is collected and used. This approach aims to enhance decision-making speed and efficiency in disconnected environments. SOCOM is also interested in AI models that require less computing power while maintaining the ability to understand human intent with minimal instruction. The focus is on developing AI tools that simplify operations, such as coordinating drone activities and executing missions with voice or gesture commands.
