India and Myanmar Strengthen Rare Earth Mining Collaboration Amid Global Supply Concerns
India and Myanmar are enhancing their cooperation in the rare earths sector, as India seeks alternative sources for these strategic minerals, which are predominantly controlled by China. Indian Ambassador to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur, highlighted the growing bilateral collaboration during a mining forum in Mandalay. This partnership has been bolstered by visits from Indian delegations focused on rare earths and critical minerals in December 2024 and February 2026. The collaboration has also been a topic of discussion during the visit of Myanmar's junta chief turned president, Min Aung Hlaing, to India. Myanmar's Kachin State, a major source of heavy rare earths, plays a crucial role in this partnership, with India exploring ways to harness these resources. Indian companies such as IREL, NTPC Mining, and others are actively engaging with Myanmar to explore opportunities in the sector.
