Maine Medical Center Nurse Released from ICE Detention, Returns to Maine
Debora Kapisha, a nurse at Maine Medical Center, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at Boston Logan International Airport. She has since been released and returned to Maine. Kapisha, originally from Zambia, is legally authorized to live and work in the United States while her asylum case is processed. Her detention prompted a swift response from the Maine State Nurses Association, which organized a rally to advocate for her release. Community members, local nurses, and city leaders, including Portland City Councilor Wes Pelletier, joined the effort to secure her freedom. Kapisha expressed gratitude for the support she received and looks forward to rejoining her coworkers and patients.
