Ofcom Approves Direct-to-Device Satellite Services, Enhancing Connectivity in the UK
The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has announced its final decision to allow the rollout of direct-to-device (D2D) satellite services across the country. This decision follows a consultation on enabling standard smartphones to connect directly to satellites using mobile spectrum bands below 3GHz. The initiative aims to enhance connectivity, particularly in remote and rural areas, by allowing mobile and satellite operators to collaborate under specific technical conditions. Ofcom's decision positions the UK as a leader in Western Europe for D2D services, with plans already in place by Virgin Media O2 and Vodafone Group to launch services in partnership with Starlink and AST SpaceMobile, respectively. The technology will utilize existing mobile bands, making it accessible on most 4G and 5G smartphones.
