Nursing Burnout: Systemic Issues Beyond Self-Care Solutions
The issue of nursing burnout is being highlighted as a systemic problem rather than one that can be solved through individual self-care practices. Nurses are often advised to engage in self-care activities such as rest, nutrition, and mindfulness to prevent burnout. However, the reality is that burnout is largely driven by healthcare systems that operate with chronic understaffing and demand high productivity. Nurses face overwhelming patient loads and extensive documentation requirements, which reduce the time available for bedside care. The profession, predominantly female, is also affected by systemic misogyny, with expectations of emotional labor and self-sacrifice. The narrative that burnout is an individual resilience problem is being challenged, with calls for systemic accountability and meaningful changes in staffing models and administrative burdens.
