Italian Court Rules Netflix Price Hikes Illegal, Orders Refunds for Consumers
A court in Rome has declared Netflix's price increases in Italy illegal, siding with a consumer advocacy group that argued the streaming service violated local regulations. The court's decision mandates that Netflix refund customers for price hikes applied between 2017 and 2024. The ruling comes shortly after Netflix announced further price increases for its U.S. plans. The Italian consumer group, Movimento Consumatori, claimed that Netflix's unilateral price changes breached the national consumer code, which requires companies to provide valid reasons for price adjustments in advance. The court has ordered Netflix to inform Italian subscribers of their entitlement to refunds through its website and major newspapers. Netflix plans to appeal the decision, which currently has no immediate effect.
