Miami Herald Layoffs Highlight Crisis in Local Journalism Amidst AI Integration and Revenue Decline
McClatchy, the parent company of the Miami Herald, implemented significant layoffs across 17 of its publications, resulting in over 90 unionized journalists and media workers losing their jobs. At the Miami Herald alone, 32 positions were eliminated, including the entire writing staff of its Spanish-language sister publication, El Nuevo Herald, and all remaining Broward reporters. This move comes as the newspaper industry continues to face a severe contraction, with over three-quarters of its jobs lost since 2005 and nearly 3,500 local newspapers vanishing. McClatchy attributes these cuts to a dramatic change in the local news marketplace, citing a 41% decline in consumer revenue while local news expenses remained largely flat. The company plans to focus on 'differentiated, consequential, and difficult to replicate' journalism, guided by subscriber interest and data, while also exploring the use of AI to generate content and optimize workflows.
