Florida's Hurricane Season Quiet Amid Strong El Niño
Florida is experiencing an unusually quiet peak hurricane season in 2026, with no hurricanes forming in the Atlantic basin as of early September. This is attributed to a strong El Niño, which has created unfavorable atmospheric conditions for storm development. Despite the lack of hurricanes, five named storms have formed this season, three of which made landfall in the U.S., including Tropical Storm Edouard, which recently impacted Louisiana and Texas. Colorado State University has lowered its forecast for the season, predicting below-average activity through mid-September. Meteorologists note that the Atlantic remains largely inactive, with no significant storm development expected in the coming weeks.
