Recent research published in RSC Medicinal Chemistry suggests that madecassic acid, a popular ingredient in Korean skincare, may possess antibacterial properties, particularly against antibiotic-resistant E. coli. The study utilized computational screening and lab experiments to demonstrate that madecassic acid binds strongly to the respiratory protein complex cytochrome bd, essential for bacterial survival during infection. This binding inhibits the complex's normal function, potentially killing the bacteria. Researchers isolated madecassic acid from a plant extract in Vietnam and modified it to create variants that inhibited cytochrome bd and shut down bacterial growth. One variant effectively killed E. coli at higher concentrations. Despite these promising findings, experts caution that further research is needed before madecassic acid can be used as an antibiotic.
